Wednesday Sep 04, 2024
Good morning, Hunt Cast fans! As we roll into September, the cooler temps are finally here. At 52 degrees, it's feeling brisk outside, but that means hunting season is just around the corner. In Pennsylvania, goose and dove seasons have already started, bringing plenty of opportunities for hunters.
For the goose enthusiasts, the season runs from September 2nd through the 25th with an eight-goose daily bag limit. And for those who prefer hunting doves, the season kicked off on September 2nd and will run through November 29th, with a daily limit of 15. The upcoming seasons for both birds promise plenty of action, so gear up and get ready!
As we look forward to archery season in Pennsylvania, which opens in 31 days, the deer are on the move. Bachelor groups are breaking up, and our cameras are capturing solo bucks and doe activity around mock scrapes. If you're using mineral sites, remember to clean them up by tomorrow to comply with state regulations.
Last weekend, we attended Camp Freedom's Summer Salute event, which was a massive success with around 500 attendees and numerous vendors. The deuce and a half truck tours, kids' fishing derby, and Greenleys Barbecue were some of the highlights. This weekend, don't miss their 9-11 Never Forget golf tournament at Woodlock Pines.
Looking ahead, we'll be at High Mountain Archery's Outdoorsman Day on Sunday, September 8th. It's a fantastic event with free access to their 3D and indoor ranges, delicious food vendors, and a two-man scramble tournament. Come join us and enjoy a day of archery and outdoor fun!
We also discussed the importance of proper nutrition and preparation for backcountry hunts. From calorie intake to hydration and first aid, being well-prepared can make all the difference. And remember, safety is paramount, as highlighted by the recent grizzly bear attack on two archers in Idaho. Carrying a sidearm and having the right first aid equipment can save lives.
Stay tuned for more exciting episodes and special guests as we dive deeper into the hunting season. Until next time, enjoy your week and happy hunting!

Countdown to Hunting Season: Trail Cams, Mock Scrapes, and Food Plots
Tuesday Aug 27, 2024
Tuesday Aug 27, 2024
Good morning, Hunt Cast fans! It's Tuesday, August 27th, and welcome to episode number 21 of our morning show. Doug and I are getting ready for the hunting season, which is just over 40 days away. We've been busy setting up mock scrapes, working on food plots, and preparing our gear. In today's episode, we'll dive into our preparations and share some valuable tips.
First, let's talk about the Pope and Young Convention. If you've never been, it's an event worth attending. They've posted the dates for April 9th through the 12th, 2025, in sunny Glendale, Arizona. Remember to bring sunscreen and some extra cash as Glendale can be pricey!
Next, we follow up on last week's episode about the Matthews letter sent to dealers. Interestingly, we've had several dealers calling us for a copy of the letter, even though we're not a Matthews dealer. This letter concerns broken lift limbs on Matthews bows, and we've been helping dealers understand the issue and providing copies of the letter.
As the hunting season approaches, it's crucial to prepare your equipment. Doug and I discuss the importance of checking your trail cameras, setting up mock scrapes, and ensuring your food plots are ready. We also share some tips on trimming shooting lanes and preparing your pathways to and from your stands.
Additionally, we talk about upcoming events, including the Mule Deer Foundation's efforts to grow chapters in Pennsylvania. Join us for an informational Beers for Deers night on Monday, September 9th, at Voodoo Brewing Company in Scranton, PA.
Lastly, a reminder to get your new bowstrings ordered and participate in our Broadhead Night this Thursday. It's a great opportunity to test different broadheads and find the one that flies closest to your field tip.
